Although there is still debate about exactly where it originated, it is generally accepted that espresso originated in Italy in the early 1900s. At the time, society was in need of a faster method of brewing coffee. To brew faster, the coffee had to be ground finer, but this took too long as it was difficult for water to flow through the coffee particles. Angelo Muriando realized that he could overcome this by using steam power. While filter coffee took an average of 5 minutes per cup, espresso could be prepared much faster. In this way, espresso was quickly adopted by the public and its commonness still continues today.
In order to recognize a good quality espresso, there are a few things to look out for. These are in order:
Crema: When espresso is poured into the cup, a cream accumulates on it, and the color of this cream is light or dark depending on the type of roasting. We should not be able to see the coffee under the crema. The texture of the crema should be a little dense and the appearance should be smooth. If you get an espresso with no crema, there should be some mistakes you had. The main reasons for this can be due to factors such as impaired machine calibration, old coffee, incorrect dose determination. Aroma: When you take a sip of coffee, you should be able to taste the characteristic aromas of the bean of your choice, rather than just caffeine. Taste and body: Under perfect conditions, your coffee should be slightly oily, with a prominent body and intense flavors. Aftertaste: A full-bodied and intense flavor should last in your mouth for a long time. Depending on the characteristics of the beans you choose, it can be dark, fruity or floral.
Filter coffee is a better choice to get the flavors in the coffee. Considering the serving size, espresso can cause complexity on the tongue as they usually transfer their flavors to a very small amount of water.
In general, filter coffee offers a smoother and lighter flavor, while espresso provides a very intense and strong tasting experience.
This depends entirely on your taste. If you are looking for a more bitter and harsh taste, you should choose dark roasted beans, while if you like sweeter and more acidic flavors, you should choose light roasted beans.
When making this choice, it does not matter which country you choose. What matters is the way they are roasted.
1- Grind your coffee as finely as possible. For a double shot of espresso, we need 18 grams of coffee. Since each coffee is unique, the grinding settings may differ from each other. We recommend you to ask your supplier to avoid problems in this regard.
2- Put your finely ground coffee into the portafilter, make sure that there are no lumps in your coffee and ensure that your coffee is well tamped by applying a force of approximately 30kg to ensure a balanced power distribution.
3- Run empty water in the spout of the espresso machine for 2-3 seconds. We call this process "Flush". The reason why we do this is to ensure that the coffee left over from the previous coffee making process is cleaned from the machine.
4- Press the double shot button and follow the flow of the coffee. Most machines have an automatic timer and stop it automatically. If your machine does not have a timer, the average time required is 25-30 seconds. You can increase or decrease it according to your taste, this is entirely up to you. If you want a more intense flavor, you can stop the flow sooner, if you want a lighter flavor, you can extend the flow a little longer. After trying a few cups, you will no doubt be able to make the best decision for yourself.
